In the great information war between democracies and dictatorships, whose side is Elon Musk on?

It appears he is favoring the dictatorships, according to two reports from the Associated Press. First, Dake Kang at the AP in Beijing reports this on Twitter: “Investigative ex-CCTV journalist Wang Zhi’an’s twitter account has been locked, for unclear reasons. Astonishing squelching of a independent, influential voice in the Chinese language media ecosystem.

Wang Zhi’an has been working on a documentary about how the Chinese government is lying to its people about what’s happening in Ukraine. Wang and a handful of colleagues have been forced to flee China and have set up Feng Xing news organization (see here) in Tokyo. (It seems to have a different name in Japanese.) These courageous journalists can probably never return to the mainland because they would be “disappeared.”

In a second report, the AP explains how Musk is no longer requiring that propaganda from China, Russia and Iran be identified as coming from foreign governments. Their disinformation can be promoted all those governments want.

So add it up: dissidents are getting blocked on Twitter. Dictatorships are being freed.
