Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to New York triggered condemnation from China. The American media was not present at a dinner her government organized for hundreds of mostly Taiwanese-Americans, apparently because of concerns that coverage would trigger aggressive action from China. But Tsai was unbowed, saying “Taiwan cannot be isolated.” And her government held the event only four or five blocks from the People’s Republic of China’s Consulate on the West Side Highway/12th Avenue in Manhattan. The location itself could be provocative. I was there in my capacity as president of the OPC Foundation.
