Marty Baron of the Washington Post Asks Important Questions About the Media Today

One of the most respected journalists in the land gave this speech in which he suggests that Americans are no longer consuming news as they once did but instead are looking at it for its entertainment value. That’s one key to the rise of Trump. But the most troubling point is that Americans can no longer agree on the facts of any particular situation. Any issue can be demonized and used to polarize us further. I continue to believe that Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, among others, have to take greater responsibility for what appears on their platforms. Tweaking the algorithmns alone won’t do it. They need to face up to the fact that they are in the news business and hire more people to make sensible judgments about what appears and what does not.
