Dear Ms. Spayd
Re: Coverage in three sections of presidential race
Date: Sunday July 17
The Times clearly tilts toward the values of the Democratic Party, yet your coverage today overwhelmingly, and unfairly, promotes Republican candidate Donald Trump.
I realize that the Republican convention is this coming week but that does not justify the presence of five separate articles and four pictures of Mr. Trump in Section A. The only coverage given to Hillary Clinton is on the obituary page! And it is an article that is largely negative about her college tuition proposals. There is no picture.
Then to continue pouring salt on the open wounds, the Sunday Review section splashes an over-the-top graphic on page 1 with another article, the cartoon on page 2 is about Trump, and Frank Bruni writes one of the most ridiculous essays in history on page 3 about Trump’s hair. There is no coverage of Hillary Clinton.
Lastly, Sunday Business has a front page story about Trump as a TV celebrity. Again, we see a picture of a smiling thumbs-up Trump.
Is the Times devoting such massive coverage to Trump simply to get people to read the newspaper? I recognize that some of the coverage is not flattering, but the sheer amount of it creates the impression that the Times takes Trump as a serious political leader. Your editors should ask themselves, “Are we so desperate to grab eyeballs that we are promoting a man who detests us and everything we stand for?”
