The evidence is mounting that the Chinese government has thoroughly penetrated American telecommunications and computing systems. The National Security Agency has compiled this map of 700 targets, as obtained by NBC News.
What are the Chinese doing with all the data they are stealing and all the system penetrations they have achieved. As Mike McLaughlin and I are discovering in research for our book Battlefield: Cyber–How China and Russia Are Undermining Our Democracy and National Security, to be published by Prometheus, the Chinese are striving to be able to monitor the internal decision-making of companies and government agencies. They are using the data collected from social media to tailor their spearphishing messages. They are compiling detailed portraits of prominent Americans of interest to them. They have previously stolen millions of pieces of data about travel patterns, financial details, health records, and more.
In effect, this is an invasion.
