FBI’s Christopher Wray Says China Has Compromised The Networks of More Than 10,000 American Companies

We knew that the Chinese assault on Microsoft’s Exchange email system last year was bad, but we did not know it was this bad–the FBI’s Christopher Wray says in a speech that more than 10,000 American companies had their networks compromised.

At the time, Microsoft said one of its “partners” in China had leaked the code that allowed the massive penetration of the system that many large companies use for their email. But now Wray says a group of criminal hackers associated with China’s intelligence, security and secret policy agency, the Ministry of State Security, did the dirty work. They stole terabytes of data from hundreds of companies, he said. His remarks have not yet hit the national media.

“Here in the U.S., they unleash a massive, sophisticated hacking program that’s bigger than those of every other major country combined,” Wray said.

When are we going to get serious about stopping this? American Information Technology systems are leaking like a sieve and China appears to have established a permanent presence in at least some of them.
