Can the U.S. get serious about 5G?

One of the tragedies that is unfolding with scarcely a murmur from Washington is that China’s Huawei has developed 5G wireless communication capabilities that exceed anything the United States has to offer. Former officers from the People’s Liberation Army built Huawei in close cooperation with the Chinese government, which may have provided $75 billion in various forms of subsidies, according to the Wall Street Journal. It should be like a Sputnik moment for us–the Soviets demonstrated they had capabilities that exceeded our own or at least rivaled them. Chinese state actors clearly can obtain access to Huawei’s networks and use them for espionage. Why haven’t we responded by developing our own technology?

Now a group of senators is proposing action. It may be too little, too late, but I believe we must at least make an effort to get on the scoreboard before it’s game over, lights out.
