As this article (below) in today’s New York Times reveals, the Trump Administration’s moves to shut down the government’s anti-disinformation operations is beginning to have disastrous effects. One example cited in the article in the tiny country of Moldova, which is scheduled to hold an election soon. At stake is whether Moldova can leave the Russian orbit and become integrated with Europe.
The Russians are using TikTok, Telegram, Facebook and other platforms to spread lies. “The Russians now are able to basically control the information environment,” one expert is quoted as saying.
The Russians and Chinese appear to be doing much the same thing in other countries. Japan and France are in political chaos. Young people in Nepal rose up in anger because they were cut off from social media. The American democracy is also at stake. So why would Trump drop our cyber defenses? The only logical explanation is that he must see foreign disinformation as supporting his drive for absolute power.
