Bill strongly believes in taking part in professional
organizations that help the profession of journalism
and its practitioners. The key organizations to which he
belongs are:

Overseas Press Club (www.opcofamerica.org): Bill was president from 1994 to 1996 and remains active on the board. He is chairman of the dinner committee for the April 24, 2008, annual Awards dinner at the Mandarin-Oriental in New York. The OPC defends and promotes the highest principles of international news coverage.

Overseas Press Club Foundation (http://www.overseaspressclubfoundation.org/): Bill has been president since 1996. The Foundation, a closely related sister of the OPC, gives 12 scholarships to college students who aspire to become foreign correspondents. In addition, it grants five internships to those students, giving them crucial on-the-ground experience in foreign capitals.

The Correspondents Fund: (http://correspondentsfund.org/) Bill is on the board of this body, which makes one-time grants of as much as $5,000 to journalists who face emergency medical bills or sudden costs associated with having to flee countries with their families in the face of intimidation or death threats. The International Motor Press Association (www.impa.org): Bill serves on the board of this organization for New York-area automotive writers and public relations professionals.
